Frost on Huckleberry and Heather - Mount Rainier National Park

Tatoosh Frost, by Don Paulson

Tatoosh Frost

When the mountain air dips to freezing

the dewdrops snap to an icy attention,

adding uniform galaxies of shimmering crystals

to russeted Autumn foliage.

The harbingers of Winter add excitement to the soul.

We sense a primal response

to the anticipation of the cold days to come,

secretly smug and openly snug

in our cocoons of warm clothing.
