It was a rewarding week of teaching photography at Rancho La Puerta in Tecate, Mexico. Kathy and I started the week with my “Nature as Art” slide show accompanied by Tom Barabas live on the Piano. Morning classes covered “Camera Basics”, “The Art of Seeing”, and “Understanding Light” and evening walks were timed for sunset when the grounds and paths were lit with lights. We met several interesting and inspiring people, including Life Coach, Richard Leider – Even rubbed shoulders with California Governor, Jerry Brown. While I was teaching classes, in-the-field sessions, and private tutoring sessions, Kathy dedicated herself to Yoga and fitness classes, connecting with people, and helping me whenever needed. After a week at Rancho La Puerta, nurturing our minds, bodies and spirits, we both felt refreshed, renewed and energized.

April 29 to May 5, 2012 (beginning & ending on Orcas Island)

Join Don Paulson and Emerald Isle Charters for an unforgettable photographic adventure. Based aboard the Na’walak, a beautiful 54-foot pilothouse ketch, you will experience and photograph the unique beauty and sunny weather of Washington’s San Juan Islands. The alluring charm of this archipelago is expressed both in its natural landscapes, and its diverse wildlife. Grass and moss carpeted hillsides give way to graceful madronas and sculpted firs. This trip is coincides with the peak wildflower bloom that fill the meadows. A variety of trails provide great opportunities for discovery. A sunny overlook, a hidden cove, a quaint one-room school house, or an abandoned lighthouse are among the myriad treasures to be found.

We will visit the less inhabited outer islands including Patos, Sucia, Matia, and Yellow Islands. All of Yellow Island is a Nature Conservancy preserve, and is famous for its extensive meadows filled with wildflowers. Each day we will explore and photograph a different island, park or preserve with walks to photogenic viewpoints. Patos and Turn Point Lighthouses are favorite photo subjects. Our evenings will be spent anchored in secluded coves. Sea Kayaks are available for an evening paddle.

This trip is ideal for photography enthusiasts who wish to improve their photography skills. You will photograph alongside professional nature photographer Don Paulson, both on shore and aboard the Na’walak. Don will be available throughout the trip for any help or photo advice you may need. His passion for photography is contagious and you will be inspired to try new and creative ways to make photographs. If you are new to photography, Don will put you at ease with his knack for clear and simple explanations to your questions. Advanced photographers will benefit from Don’s extensive knowledge and many years of working as a full-time nature photographer. In the evenings you may wish to download and view your photos for the day. Don will be available to help you with any of your downloading or photo processing questions.

Cost: $2397 Limited to six people.
