2016 San Juan Island Photo Tour (FULL – waitlist 0)

Begins and ends in Deer Harbor, Orcas Island

Join Don Paulson and Emerald Isle Charters for an unforgettable photographic adventure. Based aboard the Na’walak, a beautiful 54-foot pilothouse ketch, you will experience and photograph the unique beauty and sunny weather of Washington’s San Juan Islands.  The alluring charm of this archipelago is expressed both in its natural landscapes, and its diverse wildlife. Grass and moss carpeted hillsides give way to graceful madronas and sculpted firs. This trip is timed for the peak wildflower bloom that fills the meadows.  A variety of trails provide great opportunities for discovery. A sunny overlook, a hidden cove, a quaint one-room school house, or an abandoned lighthouse are among the myriad treasures to be found.

We will visit the less inhabited outer islands including Patos, Sucia, Matia, and Yellow Islands.  All of Yellow Island is a Nature Conservancy preserve, and is famous for its extensive meadows filled with wildflowers.  Each day we will explore and photograph a different island, park or preserve with walks to photogenic viewpoints.  Patos and Turn Point Lighthouses are favorite photo subjects.  Our evenings will be spent anchored in secluded coves.  Sea Kayaks are available for an evening paddle.

This trip is ideal for photography enthusiasts who wish to improve their photography skills.  You will photograph alongside professional nature photographer Don Paulson, both on shore and aboard the Na’walak. Don will be available throughout the trip for any help or photo advice you may need.  His passion for photography is contagious and you will be inspired to try new and creative ways to make photographs. If you are new to photography, Don will put you at ease with his knack for clear and simple explanations to your questions.  Advanced photographers will benefit from Don’s extensive knowledge and many years of working as a full-time nature photographer.  In the evenings you may wish to download and view your photos for the day. Don will be available to help you with any of your downloading or photo processing questions.

Cost: $2397 Limited to six people.

New Work Released by Studio EL

In the ever growing world of visual arts, Don Paulson has carved his name in the foundation of nature-inspired contemporary photography. His portfolio is multifaceted incorporating sweeping landscapes, delicate close ups and abstracted natural elements. This new selection of photographs reads like a travel journal from a nomadic adventure. Paulson and his partner have turned passion into occupation. Emphasizing imagery suitable to healthcare environments, the two travel the globe in search of calm locations and, cameras in hand, they meander in the wild. With this collection, viewers find themselves basking in the Caribbean sun, hiking in the rainforests of the Pacific Northwest, trekking through the hot desert sand of the American Southwest and enjoying the majestic foliage of a Southern autumn. Paulson’s knowledge and application of color theory sets his photographs above those of his contemporaries by using a well-considered palette to breathe life into each landscape. Sought after for healthcare facilities nationally, Paulson’s work is vast in its application and imagery can be found to compliment nearly any interior, contemporary or traditional.
